Gain an in-depth insight into Roman life in the seaside towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum where life came to an abrupt halt upon Vesuvius’ eruption in AD 79:

·          A full day to explore Pompeii - no other site can compare in revealing the scale, proportions and minute details of everyday life of a Roman town

·          Pozzuoli, one of the largest and best-preserved amphitheatres in the world

·          Breathtaking wall paintings at the Villa of Oplontis

·          Paestum - three huge standing Doric temples, and unique early western Greek art

"Each day of the week brought new delights."
 ...

We spend one whole day in Pompeii, exploring public buildings, private houses and shops, bars and brothels, where the occupants left evidence of their everyday lives, as well as their frantic attempts to escape the disaster. The whole region was affected, as our visits to other towns, villas and farms will reveal.

Pliny the Younger witnessed the eruption, in which his uncle lost his life, and recorded it for posterity:  "On Mount Vesuvius broad sheets of fire and leaping flames blazed at several points... They debated whether to stay indoors or take their chance in the open, for the buildings were now shaking with violent shocks, and seemed to be swaying to and fro as if they were torn from their foundations.”
