The Niños Unidos Peruanos (United Peruvian
Children) foundation was established by Jolanda van
den Berg in 1996. Having been charmed out of
her last penny by the street children of the Plaza de
Armas in central Cusco, she was inspired to establish
something more sustainable to help them.
11 years after this life-changing holiday,
Jolanda’s foundation provides a healthy meal, a
shower and sports activities to over 250 impoverished
children six days a week, all year round.
Jolanda has created a family for the twelve children
who live with her, and for a further twelve in the
care of their new adoptive parents.
Not only does the foundation support the local
children, but by employing over 40 local Peruvians,
nearly every one of whom is the breadwinner, it is
able to support a further forty families.
To become less dependent on sponsors, the foundation
runs two hotels, the profits from which go directly
to the foundation and the results are wonderfully
visible every single day as 250 noisy children
descend on the foundation’s
‘restaurant’ project for their lunch.
