Syria - From the Hauran to the Euphrates (2008)

11 days £1785 per person Next Tour: 12 October 2008 - 22 October 2008
Highlights

Find out why this tour has been described by a reviewing journalist from The Independent as “A serene journey of discovery into the heart of one of the most misrepresented countries on the planet.”:

·    Palmyra – breathtaking ‘bride of the desert’

·    A trip by steam engine (famously attacked by Lawrence of Arabia) on the antique Hejaz railway through the desert to Bosra

·    Great sites of prehistory, classical times right through to the Crusades and mighty Krak des Chavaliers

·    The biggest souk in the world at Aleppo, with wonderful silverwork and fabrics

"A very well constructed tour covering all the important sites and sampling most of the country. The historical context was exceptionally well sketched in by Nick Jackson with much enthusiasm for his subject..."
 ...

Our visit encompasses sites from the 3rd millennium onwards. The gigantic mudbrick mound at Mari was the centre of one of the world’s earliest true cities, located on the banks of the Euphrates River, a highway of civilisations. Ugarit on the coast, birthplace of the alphabet as we know it today, was a great sea-going trading centre in the Late Bronze Age. Amrit, in a beautiful coastal plain, is a rare surviving Phoenician shrine.

We will spend a memorable time with the breathtaking, Palmyra, a fulcrum for the exchange of goods from China to the lands of the west. And we steam in original Ottoman train carriages of the Hejaz railway (in our own privately commissioned train!) through the volcanic landscape towards the ancient basalt city of Bosra.
