Itinerary

Evening introductory lecture followed by dinner.
Drive to Stonehenge (7am) for an early visit (before the public arrives) inside the stone circle. This will be followed by a walk (2 hours +) through the wider religious landscape - the cursus, King Barrows and Stonehenge Avenue. Short drive to Woodhenge and views out over Durrington Walls (site of recent excavations). Return to Salisbury for an independent lunch, (meet at Salisbury Museum late afternoon for a flint-knapping demonstration, then an early evening private view of Julian’s ‘Stonehengiana’ exhibition in the museum. Dinner together in Salisbury.

Avebury (9am) for a full exploration of the huge Neolithic henge, so large that part of the village lies within it. Morning walk around the henge and along the Avenue, approaching the great stone circle as in prehistoric times. Visit Alexander Keiller Museum.

Afternoon circular walk (3 hours) past Silbury Hill, the largest man-made mound in Europe, to the chambered tomb at West Kennet, over to the Sanctuary, along the Ridgeway and return to Avebury from the east. Walking in our ancestors’ footsteps helps us try to understand their motives and methods.
