A full day at Leptis Magna, possibly the most spectacular classical site in Africa dominated by the 3rd century Imperial monuments of the Severan dynasty. The ruins are spread over a wide area, and include the old (Punic) forum, enlarged Severan forum, huge Hadrianic Baths, so-called Hunting Baths (because of their paintings) beside the sea, a theatre, an amphitheatre and circus beside the sea-shore, the remains of the harbour with lighthouse foundations, as well as numerous markets, temples and triumphal arches. A wealthy seaside dwelling, the Villa Silin, lies nearby, looking as though the late Roman inhabitants had only just left, taking their furniture and fittings with them but leaving recent traces (as well as the decorations) on the walls and floors. Some of these remains, including the site museum, will be explored today, others on Day four.

Sabratha, an important Punic trading colony and Roman city, famous for its well-preserved (although much reconstructed) theatre. The carvings in front of the pulpitum are remarkably clear, and include scenes from theatrical performances. Equally interesting are some of the ecclesiastical buildings of the 4th and 5th centuries BC, as well as the other public buildings of the Hellenistic and Roman cities.

Another full day at Leptis Magna including outlying sites such as the amphitheatre and circus, strikingly situated on the empty sea-shore, the impressive harbour and villas.

Tripoli: the Jamahiriya Museum with finds from Tripolitania, including some of the finest mosaics in the world. Short walk through the old city centre to see the arch of Marcus Aurelius, one of the few surviving monuments of Roman Oea (overbuilt by modern Tripoli). Private coach to Tripoli airport for late afternoon flight home.
