Tours for International Women's Day 2019:

1) Women of the SOE | 20th - 24th September | £1,599pp

Join award-winning author and biographer Clare Mulley on Historical Trips’ inspirational new Women of the SOE tour, a five-day exploration of the female agents involved in Churchill’s Special Operations Executive initiative. The tour – departing on September 20th – will take guests from London to Paris in search of sites connected to these women, their stories and their remarkable bravery.

Follow in the footsteps of Violette Szabo, Pearl Witherington, Noor Inayat Khan, Krystyna Skarbek (also known as Christine Granville) and Eileen Nearne this autumn, as Clare Mulley shares dramatic and often tragic stories about their lives’ actions and consequences. Visit the SOE memorial at London’s South Bank, tour the Polish Museum that houses Skarbek’s medals and, across the channel, visit the site of the infamous Gestapo Headquarters where many female agents were interrogated before their deportation to concentration camps.

Speaking about leading this tour, Clare Mulley said: “This is a very special and personal tour that follows in the footsteps of several of the female special agents, some of whom did not return, but all of whom made a significant contribution to the Allied war-effort. As well as visiting a couple of small museums, and several public and some quite hidden memorials, family members of several of the special agents have supported the tour, opening up their homes, giving talks, and sharing their knowledge. I feel strongly that the contribution made the women should be remembered respectfully, and their service honoured.”

2) Falco's Rome with Lindsey Davis | 19th - 24th November | £2,495pp

With Andante Travels, join historical novelist Lindsey Davis this November on a special tour of Falco’s Rome. Recipient of the Cartier Diamond Dagger award and author of the Falco series of historical crime stories set in ancient Rome, Lindsey is the perfect guide for this enthralling tour of the Eternal City. On this trip, follow in Falco’s footsteps, visiting palaces, slums, ports and even country estates. A number of rarely-visited sites are included in this itinerary, from the Domus Aurea and Domitian’s Palace in Castel Gandolfo, to the Mithraeum located beneath the Circus Maximus, where very special private access has been secured for the group.

Followers of Davis’ literary works will be delighted by the series of evening lectures, in which she will discuss her writing process and journey, as well as why Rome inspired her work so heavily. All meals with wine at dinner are included on this tour and accommodation will be at the Forum Hotel, which boasts stunning views over the heart of ancient Rome.
