Oliver Gilkes - Archaeologist and Deputy Tour Programme Manager
A true polymath, Oliver has worked as a rescue archaeologist, museum curator, university lecturer and excavator. He spent over two decades directing excavations in Italy and Albania, especially at the World Heritage Site of Butrint, Albania, and working on the conservation of the Ottoman city of Gjirokastra, also a Unesco site. His first tour with Andante was in 1997: a visit to the wondrous early medieval abbeys he had been excavating in Italy. Since then he has led over 40 trips to Albania and Italy. He joined the office staff in 2010 where he now works creating and planning new tours, which does not prevent him digging the occasional hole and accumulating a variety of arcane knowledge from poetry to Italian cooking.
