Day 1

Day 2

This morning we take a trip to the Villa Borghese to visit the Galleria Borghese, you will be taken on a tour of the exquisite collections of one of Rome’s great families, including Bernini’s wonderful Apollo and Danae. For a change of scene we proceed to southern Rome to the Montemartini Museum, where an innovative display of finds from Republican and Imperial Rome has been displayed. After lunch, we shall finish the day at the Pyramid of Gaius Cestius, where we find the famous ‘non-Catholic’ cemetery with the graves of Keats and Shelly.

Day 3

We begin today at the Vatican Museum, where we enjoy a guided tour of the highlights of this vast Papal collection of antiquities and art. In the afternoon, after lunch, there will be an opportunity to explore St. Peter’s Basilica independently, before returning to the Vatican Museum for our special private visit to the Sistine Chapel. In contrast to this morning, the empty, eerie, echoing Vatican palace provides the perfect tranquil background, from which to view the insistent masterpieces of Raphael and Michelangelo.

Day 4

Today is Christmas Day and we wake up to a leisurely morning where explore the sites of the Field of Mars. We walk through the Largo di Torre Argentina and the Theatre of Pompey before making our way to St. Peter’s Square for the pomp and circumstance of the Pope’s Christmas message. The remainder of the day will be spent at leisure, revelling in the festive spirit.

Day 5

A full and captivating day awaits us. We start today at the Colosseum for a special guided visit to this iconic monument of spectacle and blood. We will explore the extensive underground service passages and ascend to the upper levels of the mighty Flavian amphitheatre. The morning will finish at the other end of Roman history, with the extraordinary excavations at the church of San Clemente. We have lunch before an afternoon walk through the Roman Forum and the Imperial Fora, the great administrative centre of Rome from Republic to Empire, and our visits end at Trajan’s Column.

Day 6

This morning we leave our hotel and take a drive to Ostia Antica – the ancient port of the city of Rome. Crucially important for maintaining the imperial city Ostia kept the wheels of empire turning.
