Oberammergau, Munich & Mozart’s Salzburg
This one-off tour combines the moving spectacle of the Oberammergau Passion Play with a chance to explore Munich and discover the musical heritage of Salzburg in the company of The Telegraph’s classical music critic Ivan Hewett. The Oberammergau Passion Play is a unique phenomenon. First performed in 1634, it honours a sacred vow made by the inhabitants of the small Bavarian town of Oberammergau to re-enact the final days of Christ’s life once every ten years if God saved them from the Black Death. Miraculously, the villagers were spared and have kept their promise for over 380 years.
We depart from London on a direct flight to Munich. On arrival we head to our hotel. After check-in, we have an orientation tour of this spectacular Bavarian city, before a welcome dinner at the hotel this evening.
After breakfast, we start our exploration of Munich, taking in the grandeur of the city centre in the morning and visiting Nymphenburg Palace. This splendid, sprawling Baroque masterpiece, with its immaculately designed gardens and grounds, was the summer residence of the former rulers of Bavaria and birthplace of the ‘Fairytale King’ Ludwig II. The Wittelsbachs, Europe’s oldest royal dynasty, still occupy a wing of the palace today. We spend an afternoon in admiration of the extraordinarily ornate rooms and sublime works of art, before heading back to Munich for dinner at the famous Hofbrauhaus.
Our morning is dedicated to Munich’s magnificent Residenz, Germany’s largest city palace and official home of the Wittelsbachs. This vast complex encompasses 10 courtyards and no fewer than 130 public rooms, including the Hercules concert hall, the Court Church of All Saints, the glittering Treasury, and the former Royal riding school and stables – the Marstall. After a light lunch at the palace, we commence our afternoon drive through the beautiful scenery of the Bavarian Alps towards the tiny town of Oberammergau. Dinner this evening is enjoyed at our hotel.
Following a morning at leisure to soak up the atmosphere, we gather together in the afternoon to attend the legendary Passion Play, uniquely and traditionally performed by the townsfolk of Oberammergau. Dinner is included during the intermission.
From Oberammergau to the storybook streets of Salzburg, a city with a rich and diverse history and influential musical heritage. Our morning tour includes a visit to the Mozart Residence, and in the afternoon Telegraph classical music expert Rupert Christiansen presents an insight into the genius of Salzburg’s most celebrated son. A Mozart dinner concert with a late 18th century theme in the candlelit surroundings of St Peter Monastery is the perfect way to conclude a most memorable day.
The final morning is free for you to explore more of Salzburg at your leisure or relax at the hotel, before our lunchtime return flight to London.
