Today we fly to Lyon and prepare for our afternoon of touring. In the evening, we join the A-ROSA Stella, which will gently guide us along the Rhône.
Exclusive Andante excursion: We pay a visit to the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourviere, where collections showcasing the area’s past are displayed. We also visit the stunning Roman theatre.
After a morning at leisure, we travel from Viviers to the Ardeche. Afterwards we return to Viviers to sail onto Arles.
Exclusive Andante excursion: In Ardèche, we visit the facsimile Cave of Chauvet II, which recreates the 36,000-year-old paintings discovered in 1994 and closed to the public since. This is the largest facsimile cave ever built and offers full-sized reproductions of the paintings of animals.
We awake in Arles and we set out early for a walk around this wonderful city rich in history and artistic associations. Afterwards on to Nimes before re-joining our ship in Avignon.
Exclusive Andante excursion: We travel to Arles to visit the amphitheatre, theatre and the Roman necropolis of Alyscamps. We then proceed to Nîmes, another great centre of Roman life, where we explore the amphitheatre, the Roman temple knows as the Maison Carrée, and the enthralling Musée de la Romanité. Finally, we make a stop at the iconic Pont du Gard, the tallest surviving Roman aqueduct, which carried water over 30 miles to Nîmes.
We spend the morning in Avignon, an imposing, historic city in southern France that was home to several of the Catholic popes at one time. We return to the ship for lunch and spend rest of the day cruising down the Rhône to Vienne.
Exclusive Andante excursion: visiting the monumental Papal Palace, seat of the Avignon Popes during the so-called ‘Babylon captivity’ of the papacy from 1309-76.
We spend the morning in Vienne, then proceed onto Lyon where we rejoin the A-ROSA Stella for our last night onboard.
Exclusive Andante excursion: in Vienne we explore exploring the erstwhile capital of the Celtic tribe the Allobroges, transformed into a Roman colony under Julius Caesar and later provincial capital. Here we visit the Roman theatre, as well as the temple of Augustus and his wife Livia. Afterwards in Lyon there is free time to further explore the city at your own pace.
After breakfast on board, we transfer to Lyon airport for our flight home.
