Itinerary 2020

Day 1

We fly from London to Izmir and transfer to our hotel in Ayvalik.

Hotel: Overnight in Ayvalik

Day 2

Today we explore Hisarlik, believed to be the site of Troy, though its complex archaeology is thought-provoking more than conclusive. We stand on the occupation mound, which commands a striking position overlooking the river plains. Consider the ancient epics, while pondering the history of Bronze Age relations between the Greeks and Hittites. In the afternoon we venture to Assos, dramatically perched on a rocky ridge, offering wonderful views over the sea. Here, we see remains of a theatre and the Temple of Athena.

Hotel: Overnight in Ayvalik
Meals: Breakfast included

Day 3

We explore the outstanding Pergamon, an immense site with a plethora of remains, including a number of temples, such as the Trajaneum. The highlights are the famous Sanctuary of Asclepius, as well as perhaps the most dramatically located Greek theatre anywhere in the ancient world.

Hotel: Overnight in Ayvalik
Meals: Breakfast included

Day 4

Enjoy some free time this morning to explore Ayvalik, a traditional fishing port with stunning views and a tragic recent history. Later, we visit the remains of the ancient agora of Smyrna, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 178 AD, but later rebuilt by the order of the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

Hotel: Overnight in Izmir
Meals: Breakfast included

Day 5

Ephesus awaits today, without doubt one of the finest ancient Greek sites and famed for its Temple to Artemis. The on-site theatre and Curetes Street, a long street that ends at the library of Celsus, make this site truly exceptional.

Hotel: Overnight in Izmir
Meals: Breakfast included

Day 6

We return home today.
