Bare Bones | Essential Petra
Explore Petra, the “Rose City”, and ancient capital of the Nabateans with our expert guide on this 7-day tour to Jordan. Walking through the Siq, the famous entrance ravine to the site, is an unforgettable experience. View the fascinating facades, such as the world-renowned “Treasury”, carved into the rose-red rock and wander the colonnaded streets. Most visitors to the city will spend just a few hours here as they charge their way through the Middle East, but to do so is to miss out on some truly unique gems – after all, the archaeological park itself covers an area of more than 200 square kilometres. Besides Petra, our tour includes visits to Little Petra, the crusader castle of Kerak, the Madaba map, the copper mines of Feinan and a 4x4 tour through Wadi Rum.

We arrive in Amman, Jordan’s cultured capital, and settle in to our first hotel for a restful night’s sleep.
After a delicious Jordanian breakfast, our group checks out and makes its way to the Church of St George in Madaba, within which we discover the very first treasure of our trip: an incredible map of the Biblical world– including the oldest map of Palestine in existence – all laid in mosaics on the floor of a Byzantine Church. From here we continue to Kerak, site of one of the largest crusader castles in the Levantine region. Many a siege has taken place within these walls. We enjoy stories of these here, as well as admiring scenic views across the hills and towards the Dead Sea. We end our day at our comfortable hotel in Petra, our base for the next four nights.
A full day exploring Petra on foot is ours to savour, beginning with a walk through the stunning narrow gorge where its entrance is located. This morning we take in some of the ancient city’s most renowned and significant buildings, including Al-Khazneh, an elaborate treasury carved in to rose-coloured rocks. After breaking for an independent lunch, we come back together for further guided explorations this afternoon; a rare opportunity to roam this enigmatic archaeological site in the
company of an expert lecturer.
We re-enter extraordinary Petra this morning, this time making our way to its Roman elements, which include stunning temples, colonnaded streets and a theatre. Pausing for an independent lunch, we explore the marvellous Petra Museum, for close encounters with original artefacts including traditional tools and instruments. As ever, this evening is free for us to enjoy the cuisine and ambiance of the area.
After having explored Petra in depth, today’s excursion will be to a site known as Little Petra, also known as Siq al-Barid, probably a business district. Likewise, we will see building facades carved into the rock. A highlight here is the Painted House recently restored and Symposium rooms. This afternoon is free for us to spend at our leisure. Continue with solo explorations of Petra, or join an optional 4x4 excursion to Wadi Rum, or Valley of the Moon, to marvel the incredible rock formations and petroglyphs.
After checking out of our Petra-based hotel, our Jordanian journey leads, by 4x4 vehicles, to Wadi Feinan, a gorgeous natural area used thousands of years ago for the mining of copper – indeed, it was once home to the biggest mine of its kind in the Roman Empire. After our adventure, we journey back to Amman for our final night.
Our tour concludes this morning. Transfers are availble to the airport for your onward travel.
