Welcome to Naples
You will fly direct to Naples and enjoy a comfortable morning transfer to your four-star Neapolitan hotel. In the afternoon, your adventure begins at the restored Roman farm of Boscoreale, which was destroyed by south-easterly winds carrying volcanic ash on the day of Vesuvius’s catastrophic eruption. Boscoreale is now a working site again, and lush vines grow where they once grew in Roman times. After getting your first sense of the scale of the eruption – including the thick layer of volcanic debris that still remains – you will return for an evening of welcome drinks and dinner at your hotel in Naples.

Today is your chance to explore one of the world’s unforgettable historical sites: Pompeii. An expert guide will reveal the smothered city’s secrets and show you around Pompeii’s well-preserved buildings, including the amphitheatre and public baths, to give you an unrivalled insight into what life was like in Roman Italy. Following a delicious and atmospheric lunch on the site of Pompeii, your discoveries continue with a visit to the forum and basilica, and then on to the Villa of the Mysteries, famous for its enigmatic frescoes.

Today’s discoveries begin at Naples National Archaeological Museum, which contains mosaics, paintings and some of the best finds from the towns destroyed in AD 79, plus the incredible Farnese collection of marble sculpture brought to Naples from Rome in the 18th century. For lunch, enjoy a real Neapolitan pizza, made with tomatoes from the volcanic plains, as we dine at a traditional Italian restaurant in the coastal town of Castellammare di Stabia. In the afternoon:

Sorrento, Positano and Ravello
Today is your chance to explore the stunning Amalfi coast, as we drive to the exquisite town of Sorrento, enjoying an unforgettable view framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the city of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Discover Sorrento’s elegant cafés, restaurants and labyrinthine streets. In the afternoon, we move to the south side of the peninsula and the striking village of Positano, set high on the cliffs, with its steep streets lined with colourful cafés and boutiques, all framed beneath the striking tiled dome of the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Next you will see Ravello, where its signature whitewashed houses cluster around the famous 11th-century cathedral. You’ll end a day of breathtaking views and beautiful buildings with dinner at a local restaurant before returning to Naples.

Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius
In the morning you will visit Pompeii’s atmospheric sister town, Herculaneum, where the moulds of skeletal remains offer a stark reminder of the human cost of the volcano’s eruption. Then you will head to Mount Vesuvius, where your lunch on the slopes of the volcano itself is followed by an ascent into the crater to see the dramatic interior. From the volcano’s lip you can look down on the whole of the Bay of Naples, one of Italy’s most dramatic and beautiful views. In the evening, you will fly home direct from Naples. Your journey deep into Roman history and Italy’s unique culture and wonderful lifestyle will be an experience you will never forget.
