Sophie De Schaepdrijver
Sophie De Schaepdrijver is Associate Professor of History at Penn State. She is a historian of the First World War with an interest in how societies and individuals faced the war. She has published twelve books and numerous articles. Her most recent books are Military Occupations in the First World War (2014); Bastion: Occupied Bruges in the First World War (2014), and Gabrielle Petit: The Death and Life of a Female Spy in the First World War (2015). She is also a public historian: in 2014, she curated a major exhibition on the city of Bruges in 1914-1918, and wrote and presented the four-part TV documentary Brave Little Belgium, which has won the 2015 annual prize of the International Association for Media and History. In 2014, the King of Belgium named her Commander in the Order of the Crown.
