Fred Plotkin is a native New Yorker and one of the world’s leading experts on opera. His Opera 101 is the standard text in America for opera education. He worked in key positions at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera. As an educator and advocate for opera and classical music, he has spoken at the Met, Covent Garden, Salzburg, Verbier, the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, the Smithsonian Institution and is a frequent and popular speaker at the Oxford Literary Festival. He regularly appears on broadcasts on opera and classical music in North America and on the BBC. He had led opera seminars in New York, Vienna, Milan, Paris, Wexford, San Francisco and other major theatres and festivals.
