Yet, two thousand years ago, this playground of the rich was situated on the major highway from Gaul to Rome, the Via Julia Augusta, and Nice, was a vital port connecting the Italian peninsula with Iberia and serving as a gateway to Gallic territories. The city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, and its surrounds, are therefore rich in archaeology and ancient ruins and serve as a wonderful base for a relaxed exploration of the Côte d'Azur.
