Exploring the Archaeology of the Moselle and Rhine

7 days

From £2,395 £2,495

Activity Level:

The Moselle, with its winding banks covered in vines is most famous for its wines and beautiful landscape, though the river might be even better remembered for its rich history, which is evident from the castles brooding over its course way. There are few cities north of the Alps which have such splendid Roman ruins as Trier, ancient Augusta Treverorum, most of which date from the fourth century AD when the city was the capital of the Prefecture of Gaul. This tour offers you the delights of Trier’s UNESCO listed Roman remains, including the largely intact Porta Nigra and the Aula Palatina, as well as several impressive bath complexes. The tour also explores Trier’s wonderful Gothic architecture, particularly the Liebfrauenkirche and Cathedral of Trier, the oldest church in Germany and resonant of the city’s prosperity in Middle Ages, when the archbishop-elector of Trier controlled much of the surrounding area. After absorbing the majesty of the Moselle, we end the tour on the Rhine where we visit Strasbourg, with its famous medieval core, including the stunning Cathedral of Notre Dame. Here, we will also explore the ancient roots of Argentoratum, the seat of the Legio VIII Augusta, by visiting the Archaeological Museum.
