Summary
As far back as we can trace, Sicily was an island that numerous civilisations – Sicels, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Germans, French, Spanish, Bourbons – flocked to and fought for as a result of its strategic position. Every conquering nation left its indelible mark on the island, creating a unique mosaic of influences and a treasure trove of ancient gems, which we uncover on this extensive tour.
For the first few days we are based in the breathtaking city of Taormina, once an unmissable stop of 19th-century aristocratic grand tours, where we cross the Messina Strait to marvel at the famous bronze Warriors of Riace, discovered in the Ionian in 1972 after lying undisturbed for centuries on the seabed. We also venture out to the Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO-listed archipelago renowned for its sparkling azure waters, vineyards, sea caves, charming harbours, dramatic cliffs and black-sand beaches, to enjoy its natural beauty and visit the remains of the villages once inhabited by their Neolithic settlers. As we sail between Lipari, Salina, Filicudi and Vulcano, we understand why each isle has its own distinct character, all with stories to tell and centuries-old ruins to explore. Returning to the north of Sicily at the end of our tour, we explore the island’s Norman heritage and spend time in Palermo, one of the most stunning cities of the Hellenic World, where the impressive cathedral offers a visual representation of Sicily’s many enduring cultural and architectural legacies.?
