Day 1 - York
We meet as a group in the historic city of York and proceed with a visit to the stunning York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe and built on the Roman legionary headquarters. Afterwards we spend some time to enjoy the atmosphere of the local Christmas market.

Day 2 - York
We start our day with a visit to one of the best-preserved, known deserted medieval villages, Wharram Percy. Abandoned soon after 1500, the church is the last standing medieval building. If weather permits, we will visit another medieval settlement, Hanging Grimston. Sturdy walking boots are needed today as these two sites are on rugged terrain.
Day 3 - York
We devote more time today to further exploring on foot the historic treasures of York. In the morning we have special access to the City Walls, opened especially for our group, closed to the public. The walls which encircle York’s historic centre comprise two miles of surviving masonry and are the longest town walls in England. They were built mainly in the 13th century of magnesian limestone and, uniquely in England, were set on earthen ramparts. Later we enjoy a celebratory Christmas meal together and have time to relax with a glass or two of something special.

Day 4 - Helmsley
The extensive remains of Rievaulx Abbey await us today and here we discover the story of one of England's most powerful Cistercian monasteries. We then enjoy an invigorating Boxing Day walk into Helmsley, travelling via a route that affords great castle views.
Day 5 - Fountains Abbey – Richmond Castle
This morning we explore the ancient remains of Fountains Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery that has been nestled in the Skell Valley for more than 800 years. Later, we make our way to Richmond Castle which we admire from the outside as part of a four-mile circular walk, which also takes in the impressive ruins of Easby Abbey.
Day 6 - York
The tour comes to an end today and we make our independent onward journeys. Alternatively, why not extend the trip with a back-to-back booking and join us on our New Year in Durham short break?
Kayley is a treasure: so friendly and helpful and clearly well able to deal with the organisational problems this tour through up given the current circumstances. Guest Christmas in York , January 2022
It was a really good mix of hiking and sites and Christmas cheer. Having John Oxley, who worked on the walls for so long, gave us extraordinary insight into them including their ‘contemporary’ story, which is just as fascinating as their historic story. Evensong was spectacular as well. Guest Christmas in York , January 2022
