Languedoc - Cathars & Crusaders
From £3,045
Summary
Languedoc is a stunningly beautiful region of south-east France bordering the Pyrenees. In the Middle Ages its language and culture were fundamentally different from the rest of France and it was also a stronghold of Catharism, an ascetic Christian sect that eschewed the orthodox beliefs of the Roman Catholic church. In 1209 Pope Innocent III launched the Albigensian Crusade against this sect, named after the city of Albi. For thirty years the Catholic establishment of royal France, was pitted against the age-old traditions and customs of the region, resulting in horrific acts of war and fundamentally altering the cultural and political landscape of the Languedoc. A lasting legacy of this movement was the Inquisition, founded to root out those who stubbornly adhered to the heretical faith, but another was a fine architectural heritage. Against the backdrop of fabulous landscapes we shall explore great cities with Roman roots - Albi, Narbonne, Beziers, Toulouse and Carcassonne - but also hill-top villages, Catholic abbeys and spectacular castles perched, often in an apparently impossible manner, on craggy ledges and summits.
