Piero della Francesca & the Early Renaissance
From £2,345
Summary
Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Angelico and the Dawn of the Renaissance
Few artists have been as revolutionary or as influential as Piero della Francesca. Although known to his contemporaries principally as a mathematician and indeed famed for his treatises on algebra and geometry, Piero’s humanism and mathematical use of perspective were transformative. This tour explores the influence exercised by della Francesca, as well as the work of his most famous contemporaries, including Giotto, Masaccio and Fra Angelico in order to grasp the enormous strides taken in the Italian Early Renaissance. Sojourning in Piero’s home town of Sansepolcro, we will view some of the most important masterpieces in this incredibly fertile artistic period, including della Francesca’s masterpiece, the History of the True Cross fresco cycle in Arezzo and Giotto’s ground breaking fresçoes in the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. Your expert Guide will consider how the artists of this period introduced linear perspective and mastery of the use of light, all while guiding you through some of the most breathtakingly beautiful cities in Italy, including Urbino and Perugia.
