Archaeological & Historical Tours of the UK and Ireland
Britain’s archaeological significance has long been recognised. Early antiquarian investigations at sites such as Stonehenge and Avebury in the 17th and 18th centuries laid the foundations for modern archaeological enquiry. Today, advances in excavation, landscape archaeology, and scientific dating continue to reshape our understanding, revealing new narratives from coastlines, river valleys, and urban centres alike.
The earliest confirmed human activity at Happisburgh in Norfolk, dated to approximately 850,000 years ago, has fundamentally altered perceptions of early human migration and adaptation. The site’s preserved footprints – remarkable for their antiquity and rarity – provide direct evidence of hominin presence in a challenging northern environment.
Over subsequent millennia, Britain developed as a mosaic of tribal territories, shaped in part by migrations from continental Europe. The Roman invasion of 43 AD marked a profound transformation, integrating Britain into an imperial system whose military infrastructure remains among the most extensively studied in the former Roman world. Fortifications, roads, and settlements – supported by a garrison that once comprised a significant proportion of Rome’s total military strength – offer enduring testimony to this period of occupation and control.
The post-Roman centuries saw further waves of migration and cultural change, notably through the arrival of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, followed by Scandinavian incursions and settlement. The gradual consolidation of kingdoms culminated in political unification, though this process was neither linear nor uncontested, and continued to shape the identities of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland well into the medieval and early modern periods.
This rich and complex history is materially expressed in an extraordinary range of archaeological sites: prehistoric burial mounds and stone circles, Iron Age hillforts, Roman military installations, early medieval settlements and the castles and ecclesiastical architecture of later centuries. Together, they form a continuous and evolving record of human adaptation, belief, conflict and authority.
Our tours are designed to engage with this record at a deeper level. As specialists in archaeological travel, we offer carefully curated itineraries led by Expert Guide Lecturers – professional archaeologists and historians who accompany each tour in its entirety. Their role extends well beyond site interpretation: they provide ongoing academic context, lead discussions throughout the journey, and share their expertise in both formal and informal settings, including shared meals and travel between locations. This immersive approach allows for a more nuanced understanding of the sites visited, situating them within broader cultural, chronological, and methodological frameworks.
Across regions such as Pembrokeshire, East Anglia, Orkney and Shetland and prehistoric Ireland, our programmes explore distinct archaeological landscapes while drawing connections across time and geography. Whether examining early human activity on the Norfolk coast, the ceremonial complexes of Atlantic Scotland, or the monumental passage tombs of Ireland, each tour is structured to provide both depth of study and continuity of narrative.
In travelling through these landscapes with dedicated specialists, participants are invited not simply to observe the past, but to engage with the processes through which it is studied, interpreted and understood.
