Although the modern city was founded in the 10th century, Cairo’s setting at the apex of the Nile Delta has made it a focal point of power for far longer. Just beyond its urban sprawl lie the ruins of Memphis, capital of the Old Kingdom, and the vast cemeteries of Saqqara and Giza, landscapes in which the very vocabulary of kingship, monumentality and sacred geometry was first articulated in stone.
